The fan has a speed and temperature controller on it which you can set the minimum speed and maximum temperature. The fan has a probe which you place inside your room and when the room is below your desired temperature then the fan runs at your mimumum speed setting dial (for example 30%). This results in a much quieter fan when its not needed to be at 100% which helps if the fan will be setup
