John R. Gow and Sons Walnut and Brass Salmon Winch 9'6" Carpenter upon leaving the PayneAn interesting John R. Gow and Sons walnut and brass salmon winch, 4 3 8" in diameter with a 1 5 8" spool width. Likely dates to the 1880's. Walnut frame with brass pillars and a brass spool, the latter of which has "JR Gow" and "Dunkel" on the top and "Patent" at the bottom in a neat engraved script. The brass foot looks as though it has been shortened. The clicker drag works well and favors RHW slightly. An interesting early trolling reel!
