With Level up as a fantastic late-game mechanic, and Totem Armor existing across the colors, you have a solid set of choices at the top level
Black is one of the trickiest colours to play against when it goes for it, even when it doesn't have combo pieces like Bloodthirsty Conqueror lying in wait
If you can recur a tutor effect when you cast it, you basically guarantee yourself a nonstop value engine that will eventually grind your opponent out of cards
But while I tried doing a more traditional ramp-style shell, Kodama only seemed good exactly in concert with Felidar Retreat, otherwise it was just too small
I have to imagine that there will be a self mill engine printed in Zendikar Rising, so maybe Drowned Secrets will not be missed so much, but I have had a lot of fun playing with it and employing both strategies even if neither one was particularly competitive
